FUTURE LEARN - CONTINUOUS PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Let me draw your attention to Future Learn - read all about it here https://www.futurelearn.com/about

Free, short online courses on a variety of subjects.

I have just finished one on aspects of Irish history - excellent.

I have just started on called Introduction to Journalism, produced by Strathclyde University.

Today's main points for me were to do with understanding "news values", what make a great news story and the importance of Who, What, When, Where, Why in drawing out the facts.

News values (these are my notes after watching the videos, etc):

Timeliness
Proximity
Unusualness
Bad News
Impact
Celebrity
Entertainment/Feel Good
Good News
Follow-ups
Media Agenda (to fit a news organisation's stance).

There were thoughts about opinion, criticism, over-simplification and the notion that news brings more news.

Even in a hour this morning, I think I have a foundation-level of understanding about how to analyse a news story.  Onward.
